Originally from a rich family of ship-owners, Louis Valtat was born in Dieppe, France in 1869. Led by an artistic vocation, he takes art classes at the School of Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1887-1891, then at the Julian Academy from 1891-1892 where he meets Bonnard, Vuillard and Georges d’Espagnat.
