Biography of Julio Silva
The Franco-Argentinean painter and sculptor Julio Silva was born in Argentina in 1930. The artist is also known as a great collector of African art and primitive art, a collection he started in the mid-1950s.
The artist is known for many of his creative facets: for his poetic drawings, for his colourful gouaches, but even more so for his monumental sculptures, often in Car-rare marble.
He moved to Paris in 1955 and became a French citizen in 1967. In the early 1970s Julio Silva worked frequently between Carrara and Paris.
During the seventies and eighties, the sculptor obtained numerous commissions and the artist produced a large number of works for public spaces (Paris, Courrières, Villeurbanne with an ensemble of eight sculptures, Ris-Orangis, Puteaux, Lognes, etc.). His style is recognizable among all by his ability to shape marble like finely polished pebbles, whose grace and lightness make them beautiful.
The artist's first personal exhibition was held at the University Gallery in 1959. Others will follow over time (Paris, Buenos Aires, Brussels, Milann, Mexico City, New York, etc).
In the field of bibliophily, close collaboration will be established between one of the most famous Latin American writers of the 20th century, Julio Cortázar (1914-1984) and Julio Silva, his Argentinean compatriot. Their friendship was so strong that they were nicknamed "Julio pluma" for the writer, and "Julio pincel" for Julio Silva. Chronologically, the first book that brought them together was "Les Discours du Pince-Gueule", published in its first edition in Paris in 1966. Julio Silva's collages will appear in his next three books, "La vuelta al día en ochenta mundos" (Back to the time in eighty worlds) in 1967, "Ultimo round" (Last round) in 1969, and then also in "Territorios" (Territories) in 1978. The two men, true accomplices, created a series of what must be considered as books-almanachs, in which the image is not a simple illustration of the text but a game of creative tension that is woven between the two beings and that will last until the writer's death in 1984.

Artists on display
The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.
Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.
We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
