Biography of Jasper Johns
Jasper Johns, painter and illustrator, is born in 1930 in Augusta (Georgia) in the United States. He studies a year at the University of South Carolina before traveling to New York, following the advise of his teachers. There he meets Robert Rauschenberg, Merce Cunningham and John Cage, with whom he works and explores the contemporary art scene. Johns and Rauschenberg become very close, working closely together in the same workshop, and sometimes even creating together. At that time Jasper Johns, fascinated by Marcel Duchamp, destroys almost all of his work, and chooses to do "ready-made". This artistic turning point leads on the first American flags, targets, alphabets, numbers, and is in opposition to the abstract expressionism that dominates at that time. His first solo exhibition, held in 1958 at Leo Castelli (opening his own gallery), is a resounding success. From 1959, the primary colors blue, yellow and red becomes more important in the work of the artist. During this same period, his relationship with Rauschenberg deteriorates. During the 60s, his work is focused on the integration of objects in his painting and the creation of his first sculptures. Alongside his paintings, Jasper Johns has built a large graphic work. Often regarded as an artist of pop art, Jasper Johns, as well as Rauschenberg, is acknowledged as belonging to the neo-Dada movement.
