Biography of Jacques Herold
Jacques Herold was born in Piatra Neamt (Roumania) in 1910. Very young, Jacques Herold refuses to accept all kinds of academic painting classes. He first realizes few posters to pay his trip on the Danube River; he arrives in Paris in 1930. He works as Brancusi’s assistant. He meets with surrealist painters, one of whom being Yves Tanguy. For his love of freedom he will be able to put up with very rough-and-ready life conditions. His links with surrealists painters are mainly based on friendship, especially in 1940 when the German invasion push them back to Marseille. Surrealist painter, scuptor, graphic artist, André Breton and Jean-Pierre Duprey imagine for Jacques Herold a list of titles for his paintings ; they also dedicate him a text that the artist sticks up with his own illustrations on the walls of Paris shortly before May 68. He will do the same with his close friend’s poems Gherasim Luca. Jacques Luca died in 1987 in Paris.
