Biography of Horst Janssen
Horst Janssen is born in Hamburg in 1929. Between 1946 and 51, the young man takes courses in high school to study art in Hamburg (landeskunstschule). Horst Janssen publishes his first drawing in the weekly "Die Zeit" in 1947, then the following year his first book (for children) "Der Wettlauf zwischen dem Hasen und dem Igel". In 1950, he receives a state scholarship and produces his first woodcuts, influenced by Edvard Munch and later on by the Brut Art of Jean Dubuffet. In 1954, he learns the art of lithography, Horst is the pupil of Paul Wunderlich whom he considers later on a rival. In 1957, he works on a series of large woodcuts color; his art gets major recognition (exhibition at the Hans Brockstedt Gallery, Hanover). The tumultuous life of Horst Janssen is still entirely devoted to the art of engraving (wood engraving and etching). In addition, the artist has done, over time, a set of about 360 posters; the poster reflects his enthusiasm for the use of various artistic techniques. Horst Janssen is considered one of the most important writers and artists of the postwar period. He dies on August 31 in 1995 in Oldenburg (Germany), where he rests in peace.

A tribute to Horst Janssen

Sa vie sera marquée par de nombreux mariages, par des opinions virulentes, par un alcoolisme avéré ainsi que par un dévouement désintéressé à l'art de la gravure. Atteint par un accident vasculaire cérébral, l'artiste allemand Horst Janssen est mort à Hambourg le 31 août 1995 ; il y était né 66 ans auparavant. Il repose au cimetière Sainte Gertrude d'Oldenburg (Gertruden Kirchhof). En novembre 2000, la ville d’Oldenburg inaugurera le Horst-Janssen-Museum en l’honneur de l’artiste. En son hommage, cette pensée sombre.
