Biography of Hermann Nitsch
Hermann Nitsch is born in Vienna (Austria) in 1938. Before turning to painting, he studies at the Institute of Applied Graphic Arts of his hometown. In the early 60s, in collaboration with Otto Mühl and Adolf Frohner, he organizes actions inspired from happenings and Fluxus performances. During this period he develops the concept of "Theater of Orgies and Mysteries", with the integration of "total art work" (painting, architecture, music, etc.) which is supposed to put on extreme tension each participant who becomes aware of his own existence. The worldview of Hermann Nitsch is strongly influenced by writers such as Sade, Nietzsche, Freud, Artaud and Georges Bataille. Nitsch's work, mostly ceremonial in nature and wanting to break taboos, is extremely controversial; the artist does not hesitate to include blood - animal or human - excrement, combining ritual to elements of liturgical. Hermann Nitsch is considered the master of the "Viennese Actionism" (1962-1968), a protest movement that sought to heal the gaping wound opened during the Third Reich.
