  Biography of Gérard Garouste

Born on March 10, 1946, in Paris, Gérard Garouste occupies a unique place in French contemporary art. Trained at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he began developing, as early as the 1970s, a body of work deeply rooted in narrative, drawing inspiration from literature, mythology, and sacred texts.
Going against the dominant trends of his time, Garouste champions a style of painting centered on the figure and narrative, situating his work within a reimagined tradition. His world, where erudition and imagination intersect, readily engages with that of great predecessors such as Francisco de Goya, William Blake, and Marc Chagall, whose visionary and symbolic dimensions he extends in his own way.Alongside his paintings, printmaking plays a central role in his artistic practice. Beginning in the 1980s, Garouste immersed himself in lithography and engraving, exploring the possibilities offered by these techniques with remarkable rigor and freedom. Far from being a mere extension of painting, printmaking constitutes for him an autonomous space, conducive to a more direct, and at times more incisive, style. In his engravings, the line gains in energy and spontaneity. The figures, often fragmented or in a state of transformation, evolve within compositions where signs, letters, and symbols intertwine. This graphic universe, of great intellectual density, finds a particular resonance in the tradition of engraving, at times evoking the expressive tensions of a Rembrandt or the inventive freedom of a Pablo Picasso in his printed work.Collaborating with leading print shops, Garouste produces limited editions that demonstrate a constant attention to material, contrast, and the construction of the image. Lithography allows him to deploy a wide range of nuances, while intaglio techniques reinforce the dramatic tension of his compositions.Gérard Garouste’s engravings—accessible through their multiple formats yet demanding in their content—thus stand out as an essential extension of his artistic vision. In them, he explores with particular intensity the themes that run through his entire body of work: the search for meaning, the interpretation of texts, and the power of images.Today, his prints hold a recognized place in the art market, confirming the importance of an artist whose work, deeply rooted in history, continually renews its forms.
