Le peintre tchèque Frantisek Kupka qui compte parmi les pionniers de l’abstraction est mort d’un cancer des poumons à Puteaux le 24 juin 1957, il avait 85 ans. Émigré à Paris dès 1896, homme solitaire, il aura toujours voulu garder son indépendance, sa liberté par rapport à tous les grands mouvements de l'Art. Cet immense peintre refusera toujours l'appellation d'artiste abstrait. Il repose dans le columbarium (87e division, case 22696) du cimetière du Père Lachaise à Paris. En son hommage, avec respect, ce bleuet.
"Ma peinture, abstraite ? Pourquoi ? La peinture est concrète : couleur, formes, dynamiques. Ce qui compte, c'est l'invention. On doit inventer et puis construire. " - Frantisek Kupka
"À la différence des arts du verbe, des sons ou du geste, qui ne peuvent être compris qu’en se déroulant dans le temps - le poète allant de mot en mot, le musicien de note en note, le danseur d’attitude en attitude -, les arts plastiques appartiennent au moment présent, mettant sous nos yeux, en bloc des sources d’émotion qui, ailleurs, n’entrent en jeu qu’à tour de rôle." - Frantisek Kupka
