Biography of Barbara Hepworth
English sculptor Barbara Hepworth was born in 1903 in Wakefield (West Yorkshire). Student at the Royal College of Art in London, the young woman tried to escape in 1923 from the academic teachings of sculpture as they were performed in England. She tested wood and stone carving, her favorite materials, searching the fundamental unity inspired from primitive people's works. From that time, her works were oversimplified and came very close to abstraction. In 1931, Barbara Hepworth got married with the painter Ben Nicholson, joined the group « Seven and Five », then moved to Paris where she met Brancusi, Arp and Mondrian. A few years later, she became involved with the movement « Abstraction-Creation » and contributed to the publication of « Circle », edited by Naum Gabo, Antoine Pevsner's brother. Then she elaborated a personal work dominated by abstraction. Being part of geometric or organic trends, following periods, or reconciling both, the free form predominated in Barbara Hepworth’s works. First-rate artist, she is often qualified to be equal to her friend Henry Moore, sculptor. Barbara Hepworth, was knighted and given the title of « Dame » - Lady -. She died in Saint Yves (Cornouailles) in 1975. Barbara Hepworth's museum was created in her hometown of Wakefield, England, in 2011.

La sculptrice et peintre britannique Barbara Hepworth est morte à Saint Ives en Cornouailles le 20 Mai 1975 ; la représentante majeure de la sculpture abstraite de la première partie du XXe siècle avait 72 ans. Elle repose au Longstone Cemetery à Carbis Bay en Cornouailles, dont les paysages auront fortement influencé son œuvre à partir des années 1940, sa sculpture tendant vers une dimension plus humaine. En son hommage, avec respect, cette fleur de magnolias.
