  Biography of André Bloc

  Architect, sculptor, editor, André Bloc is born in Algeria (Alger) in 1896. His family moves to France two years later. He studies engineering until 1920 and works in factories. In 1921 he meets Le Corbusier who influences him and turns to architecture. After working for several magazines, he founds in 1930, the famous magazine “Architecture d’Aujourd’hui” which he leads for many years. He is in contact with architects such as Auguste Perret, Henri Sauvage or Jordain. In 1940, André Bloc turns to sculpture and creates large sculptures in Paris (1949-1957). He founds the magazine “Art d’Aujourd’hui” in 1949. In 1951, Bloc creates the group Space (Espace). The goal is to bring the ideals of constructivism and urbanism neo-plasticism, considering architecture and painting, sculpture and art as a social phenomenon; the group is composed of artists and urbanists, such as Jean Dewasne, Etienne Béothy, Jean Gorin, Félix Del Marle, Edgard Pillet, Victor Vasarely et Nicolas Schöffer. André Bloc works until his death, mainly as an architect, sculptor and set designer; his sculptures have an organic sculptural form halfway between architecture and sculpture. His philosophy is to combine the "art of engineer, the art of builder, the art of the artist, the art of the architect." André Bloc dies in New Delhi in 1966.
