Biography of André Lhote
André Lhote was born in Bordeaux in 1885. He took classes at the Fine Arts School. First a sculptor, he then moved on to painting. As soon as 1912, the artist got closer to the cubist movement while keeping a tie to the so-called « classical » painting, turning down the abstract side of cubism. From thee beginning, André Lhote felt in synch with the « all decorative » trend of the « Art Nouveau » and all his life he will have a strong taste for decoration. His art was in line with modernity not as a break point but as a continuity in tradition. His point was to make painting intelligible but at the same time leave enough room for « emotional disorder ». Both theoritician and teacher, in 1925, he set up his school (Rue Odessa, Montparnasse) and organized summer camps for his students in his own house in Mirmande (Drôme). André Lhote wrote theoritical essays and art critic books. For many years he will be in charged of the art critic page in the New French Review (Nouvelle Revue Française). The artist died in Paris in 1962.

Quelques mois auparavant, André Lhote avait passé son dernier été près de son cher bassin d'Arcachon. L'artiste s'est éteint le 24 janvier 1962. Il repose dans le cimetière du Montparnasse à Paris. Sur sa tombe, un ange, reproduction de l'un de ses dessins. En son hommage, cette passiflore, fleur de la passion.
