Born in Mantanzas (Cuba) in 1927, Augustin Cardenas (Agustín Cárdenas) studied at the Fine Arts Academy of San Alejandro between 1943 and 1949. Arriving in Paris in 1955, he sets up in Montparnasse. The painter-sculptor is very quickly revealed by André Breton who was seduced by his spiritual, poetical and sensual work. Augustin Cardenas is introduced to the last group of surrealists and participates in many of their group exhibitions. Abandoning his formal training, with the surrealists he rediscovers his African roots and fully expresses eroticism through is work. The sensual lyricism of his sculptures inspired by African legends and primal origins mixed with animalistic rituals give his work a universal language. Cardenas draws a lot, almost systematically, he works the plaster. His sculptures exude sensuality, smooth and curved evocative of feminine figures, revealing strong symbols. He is one of the pioneers of modern sculpture along with Brancusi or Arp. From 1956 to 1997, he participates in hundreds of group exhibitions and thirty four solo shows. As of 1968 he lives and works regularly in Meudon-Bellevue and at his studio in Nogent-sur-Marne. He also worked in Canada, Austria, Japan, Israel and in Korea but mostly in Italy at Carrere where he worked on marble and at Pietrasanta where his bronze sculptures were cast. From 1994 to 2001, he returned to Havana where he passed away in 2001. His art is a synthesis of culture from the three continents, lending itself to reverie.

Artists on display
The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.
Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.
We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
