Notes of biography

Stanley William Hayter, one of the uncontested masters in etching of XX ° century, was born in London in 1901. His father, who was a painter, made him shared very early his Art interest; he learnt very young, but made scientific high-level studies and obtained diplomas of organic Chemistry and Geology. From 1922 till 1925, Hayter had been working in the Middle East for big oil companies.
He gave up his career then settled down in Paris in 1926. He decided to dedicate himself to the art. Introduced to the etching by Joseph Hecht and Jacques Villon, he opened his etching studio the year after. Opened-mind man, liking to share, experiences and researches, work in several hands, he opened his studio to everyone, and his studio became naturally a place of education and exchange. Hundred of Artists worked there. In 1933, Hayter’s studio first changed his address then was named “Atelier 17” and became quickly famous all over the world. At this time, all the big creators were enticed into the Atelier 17 and attracted by the man: Miro, Arp, Giacometti, Kandinsky, Matta, Ubac, Alechinsky, Tanguy, Masson, Vieira da Silva and so many others, comparing with each others searches and finds. During 10 years (1940-50), time of a war and post-war years, he opened his studio in New York; there, he met Pollock, Rothko, Motherwell and all the upholders of the future new American painting.
Back in France, his studio moved several times, and always set the pace in search and experiment. Numerous innovations came from the Atelier17; we can retain among them, the new process allowing to take a print from an etching in several colors with a single passage of the plate under the press. For Hayter, according to its speed, its intensity and its direction, every line reflected different deliberate meanings. Stanley William Hayter, abstract painter-etcher, « poet of the line », participated in uncountable collective exhibitions, in Shows, biennals and a big number of exhibitions was dedicated to him only. He illustrated literary works and poets - was not he one?
The artist died in Paris, in 1988.

Artists on display

The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.

Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.

We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
