C'est en Haute-Savoie, en 1946, que Raoul Ubac trouve par hasard un premier fragment d'ardoise et qu'il y grave un dessin à l'aide d'un clou. « J'ai été très étonné par la possibilité graphique qu'elle offrait. J'ai alors pratiqué ce qu'on appelle la taille au champ-lever dont se servaient les artistes celtes : on contourne un thème et on laisse une partie brute . . . ». Peu à peu, avec force persévérance et humilité, Raoul Ubac - l'artiste certes, mais l'homme - se lie naturellement à l'ardoise, « véritable livre de pierre que la nature lui tend, » comme l'écrit Christian Nicaise. Cette pierre n'est-elle pas rappel de sa forêt native et de l'ardoise bleue de « ses Ardennes », des plateaux des Hautes Fagnes, des forêts de chênes et de sapins, des schistes et des carrières . . . d'ardoise, parmi lesquels il a grandit ?
Pendant de longues années de tête à tête solitaire, l'artiste va repousser toujours plus loin les limites de ce travail magnifique, magnifique à la fois par sa nudité et par le silence qu'il impose, par cette recherche profonde de soi dans le geste de la main, dirigeant toujours sa recherche vers le centre de toute chose, le centre mystérieux de la Création. Il y a dans cette union tacite le respect de l'un pour l'autre, l'acceptation de fait d'un partage de vérité dans l'innocence la plus pure. Débarrassé de l'inutile, Ubac va son chemin. J'ai souvent pensé à lui, car il est pour moi le symbole d'une vie qui se simplifie et va à l'essentiel, une sorte d'allié et de proche, un homme debout à côté duquel il fait bon se tenir ; l'engagement de l'artiste est total, quasi religieux, celui d'un marcheur sur le long chemin de la beauté du monde. Raoul Ubac créera naturellement des empreintes où sculpture et gravure semblent se combiner. « Le trou de serrure » est un bel exemple des empreintes de Raoul Ubac (il en contient sept) ; réalisé en 1968, ce livre-objet réunit bien des aspects de l'oeuvre d'Ubac, la sculpture, la gravure, les empreintes, sa relation avec la chose écrite. En vérité, combien j'aurais aimé « toucher la main » de cet homme !

The first French stamp was emitted in 1849, England preceded us by ten years. There is often a share of voyage in this small form of shape paper. Le peintre - photographe, sculpteur, graveur - d’origine belge Raoul Ubac s’est éteint le 24 mars 1985 à Dieudonné (Oise) où il vivait. Il avait 74 ans. Ses cendres furent éparpillées dans le Jardin du Souvenir au cimetière du Père Lachaise à Paris. Celles de son épouse l’y rejoignirent il y a peu. En hommage à leur mémoire, avec respect, un lys double.

Notes of biography
The painter-sculptor Raoul Ubac was born in 1910 in Malmédy (Ardennes, Belgium). He went to school there, then settled down in Paris in 1930. He joined La Sorbonne (Paris) to follow studies of letters, but changed his way and decided to frequent the Art Academies of Montparnasse. He discovered little by little his vocation for the art.
He saw surrealists regularly and often participated in the exhibitions of this group between 1934 and 1940. Ubac liked the photography; he contributed with Camille Bryen to the realization of a work of poetry, went regularly from 1935 till 1938, to the Atelier 17 of Stanley William Hayter where he learnt the engraving and associated this technique to the photography. His art is deliberately non-representational.
Ubac participated in very numerous collective exhibitions. Regularity, from 1951, the Gallery Maeght did exhibitions on his work. This gallery published engravings and lithographs of the artist. The review "Minotaure" published his photos-reliefs (solarisation). His "burnings" developped his art towards the lyric abstraction. He was member of the Cobra-group.
Raoul Ubac’s commitment in his art is total, almost religious; his way got simplified, finding little by little the very pure way of the primitive arts. Meditative, the artist said in an interview: «I would wish a state of innocence which would reflect through the work the magnificence of the world ».
In 1945, Ubac discovered the slate and created imprints where sculpture and engravings seemed to harmonize. Lines were pure, the works had a mystic character. In 1968, were organized retrospectives in France (Paris) and in Belgium (Charleroi, Brussels). Ubac created wall decorations, boxes for the tapestry, illustrations of numerous works, stained glasses, from monumental realizations to the size of a postage stamp.
Raoul Ubac died in 1985 in Dieudonné.

Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.
