Notes of biography

Pierre Soulages is born in Rodez (Aveyron) in 1919. His childhood is marked by the harshness of the landscapes and the souls which surrounded him. As he was 18 years old, during a short stay in Paris, Soulages visited two exhibitions (Cézanne, Picasso) which were so many revelations. He studied at the Beaux Arts in Montpellier.
After the world war period, Soulages engages exclusively in painting. He settled down in Paris, then built a studio in 1959 in Sète, and finally shared his time between both places. His life will now be exclusively turned to his work and his exhibitions. Very early he became an artist in the different techniques he used : washings, drawings in the charcoal, the abstract paintings, the black or brown calligraphic signs taking up the white surface.
Pierre Soulages participated in very numerous collective exhibitions from 1947, in France and abroad; he never stopped participating in it and received his prize of distinctions there. From 1949 and even until today, his works are shown in a multitude of personal exhibitions (Museums, galleries). In that way, in 1996, after Seoul and Peijing, the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris organized a vast retrospective of Soulages.
The artist, at the same time as the painting, worked for the theater. He realized, from the beginning of the 50s, an etched and lithographed work which will be important. In 1957, he discovered the technique «corroded copper» that will be used with his graphic art. Soulages made tapestries (1987-1994) and stained glasses for the abbey church Sainte-Foix of Conques. In 1976, he began the sculpture and created his first bronzes.
Always Pierre Soulages will impose his art as so many lightning, whole and evident gestures.

Artists on display

The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.

Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.

We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
