Notes of biography

The painter Patrick Devreux is born in Paris in 1949. He is passionately devoted primarily to engraving; this exercise of discipline conditioned all of his art. Now a professor at the Superior National School of Fine Arts in Paris (where he teaches lithography), he is, after having long been a member, Chairman of the May Salon. Painter, lithographer, engraver, he begins to exhibit in the mid-70s, since that period and participating regularly in group exhibitions in France (Paris, Nice, Nimes, Ales, Metz, etc..), as abroad (Ivory Coast, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Japan, Austria, Finland, etc..), including prestigious events (Fine Arts International Matsuzakaya in Tokyo, French Institute of Barcelona, Graphic Design in Finland, Osaki Art Museum Tokyo or Richelieu National Library in Paris). Patrick Devreux presents his work since 1978 at the Salon de Mai, New Reality Salon, the FIAC (from 1990-1994) and in important International Biennial. The first exhibition is organized in 1977, many more to come since then, mainly in France.
In addition, Patrick Devreux is collaborator of the newspaper “Passage of ink” and he creates, in 1975, with Evelyn Gerbaud, the Editions and the lithography and etching Workshop of St Christol of Rodières. The artist has also published many books for bibliophiles, accompanying some of his fellow poets and writers.
His work is marked by a profound interiority. The artist offers us an art in which restraint and emotional burden is intense. Patrick Devreux transcribes on his canvas, his stone or copper, fleeting fugitives moments, clever mix of his own reality and memory. Leaving aside the details of things, Patrick Devreux in his intensity search, goes deliberately to the point. Outside the madding crowd, the artist likes to work in silence, his creative process happens close to nature in a small village with a few houses.
When we ask Patrick Devreux to cite a few artists who are dear to him, he quickly responds: the painters Lucas Cranach, Lucian Freud, Edouard Vuillard and Vihelm Hammershoi, the photographers Antoine d’Agata, Alix Cléo Roubaud and Clara Chichin, The writer Joël Bastard, with whom he has worked extensively.
The resolute silence of Patrick Devreux’s process is made of contained measurement and balance. If his bold brush dares to rare tones, oranges, greens, dense aromas enliven the pictorial frame of drives lovingly nurtured. Specters haunt the spaces of infinity. Nudes meet these presences to talk to the first time the infinite,” writes Lydia Harambourg.

Artists on display

The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.

Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.

We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
