Nigel Oxley

"Etching is limited only by the imagination."

Notes of biography

After graduating in 1971 from Camberwell School of Art and Crafts, Nigel Oxley joined Cliff White at White Ink Studio in London where he progressed from Assistant to Printer and Etcher. Among the artists he worked for were Dame Elisabeth Frink, Victor Pasmore, Edduardo Paolozzi and Richard Smith. He left White Ink in 1978 having been invited to set up at the renowned Kelpra Studio, where, as Master Printer and Etcher, he established a reputation for complex, multiplate colour etchings. Notable amongst these are the works of John Piper, Patrick Heron, Jim Dine annd Bernard Cohen.
Nigel Oxley stayed until 1990 having already set up his own etching studio. He had also started teaching life drawing at the City of London Polytechnic (later to become London Metropolitan University). As senior Lecturer establishing an influential Printmaking Course that produced many succeful students. This came to an end 2012 when Nigel left to concentrate on his own work. Nigel lives in East Sussex (St Leonards on Sea) where he is working with Susan Aldworth and is establishing a teaching studio.
In 2007, the artist publishes "Colour etching", today a reference book (A. & C. publisher, Londres) ;  he described the techniques of etching and aquatint employed by the artists who worked withhim at Kelpa Studio. The author introduced the use of carborundum and polymer plates to the studio and this book includes step-by-step descriptions of these techniques, including the use of multi-plates. This book is a valuable practical guide for the beginner and for those wishing to develop their printing and etching skills.
In 2012, together with John Read, Nigel Oxley is one of the founders of Prism Print International, a group of 32 artists from seven different countries ; Prism  acts as a forum for cross-cultural exchange through fine art printmaking and international exchange exhibitions. Prism organizes or joins famous exhibitions on a regular basis. (London, Tokyo, Milan, Urawa, Cremona, etc).

Artists on display

The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.

Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.

We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
