A tribute to Natalia Gontcharova
Natalia Gontcharova meurt à Paris d’un cancer le 17 Octobre 1962. Cinq jours plus tard, elle sera inhumée dans la section russe du cimetière d’Ivry-sur-Seine (Division 7, rangée 1, tombe 14). Mikhail Larinov, qui fut son mari, la rejoignit deux ans plus tard. Une même épitaphe est inscrite sous leur deux noms : “Artiste, Peintre”. Sur leur tombe, une fleur blanche.

Notes of biography
The daughter of an architect, Sergueïvna Natalia Gontcharova is born in Nagaïevo in Russia in 1881. She grows up in the countryside with her grandmother. From her childhood, she always remembers the rural life and farm work as well as a great interest in rural customs. Natalia Gontcharova follows art classes at the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Moscow from 1901 to 1909. There she meets the painter Mikhail Larionov who becomes her companion (They married in 1955), his name is inseparable from that of her future husband.
From 1906 to 1912, looking for concrete forms and simplified lines, she paints neo primitiviste canvases. She mainly deals with themes of rural life and religious painting. From 1907, she participates in associations and major exhibitions of Russian avant-garde, « La Guirlande-Stephanos », « La Toison d’or », « Le Valet de Carreau » (Larionov, Kazimir Malevitch and Vladimir Tatlin, 1910), « La Queue d’âne », « la Cible » (1914). In 1912, Gontcharova participates with her husband at the second exhibition of the Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) in Munich. She signs in 1913, the manifesto of the rayonnism. These religious paintings, considered blasphemous by their free treatment and colors, are censored.
From 1912, the artist paints works of futurist and radiant paintings, which tend to abstraction. She illustrates the poets of this movement, publishes a portfolio of lithographs ("Mystical Images of War"). Natalia Gontcharova leaves Russia permanently in 1915 for Switzerland, and then moves to Paris. She devotes herself, until 1929, to the creation of sets and costumes for Diaghilev's Russian Ballets, and for theater and opera. She attends regularly at the Salon of Independents and Salon of Autumn in 1922.
Between 1926 and 1929, the artist gets a large number of works that had been seized in Russia during her departure. She realizes, in the early 30s, illustrations for "Le Populaire" newspaper of the Socialist Party. Gontcharova returns to a more figurative painting with a series of still lifes (Magnolias) and Spanish. With the war the couple falls into oblivion and separates.
In 1948 Michel Seuphor organizes a retrospective exhibition Goncharova- Larionov in Paris.
Alongside the artistic community in Paris, poor, Natalia Gontcharova dies in Paris in 1962.

The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.
Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.
