Stamp by Manolo Valdés
fictional stamp
The publication of a postal stamp is often a homage paid by a nation to a place, an event, a remarkable cause or a character which count. The painters and other artists do not escape from this rule. Some are however "forgotten" of postal art. Here, gathered below (French or foreign), emitted stamps (206) or simple studies of stamp (224) in homage to the artists represented on our website. The first French stamp was emitted in 1849, England preceded us by ten years. There is often a share of voyage in this small form of shape paper. The stamp circulates, sails, flies away, it makes dream, then dream a little. M.C.
When the stamp is really emitted, the artist name is preceded of an asterisk (*).
It is certain that we do not know each stamp emitted for such or such artist; do not hesitate with us to make known them!

Notes of biography
Painter and sculptor, Manolo Valdés was born in Valencia (Spain) in 1942; when he cames to the Academy of Fine Arts in San Carlos, he met young artists; with Rafael Solbes he founded the « Equipo Cronica » in 1964, and Juan Toledo joined them.
Equipo Cronica was the most important Pop Art movement in Spain. When Equipo Cronica was created in 1964 Franco was still in government and the artists of this kind were obviously classified among the mental defectives to watch and possibly to eliminate if their subversive capacity became too important. Quickly, Joan A.Toledo adopted a different way while Valdés and Solbes were producing many performances and exhibitions to make the movement well known. Equipo Cronica was famous because of the mass-produced images and above all the captation of elements drawn from the art history.
As El Paso or Dau al Set, Equipo Crónica is a reference of the Spanish art of the second half of the XXth century; so Manolo Valdés cannot be separated of this group, even after 1980 when Solbes died and the collective was dissolved. Alone, Manolo Valdés went away from irony and used the image as the symbol and the link between the artwork and the spectator. Masterpieces were revisited and the masters who filled the pages of the art history - Picasso, Matisse, Vélasquez; Ribera, Van Eyck - were figured in some other way.
Since 1981, Manolo Valdés has lived in New York, and in his studio, a private paradise where he created his own universe, he was working alone. He was more interested in the texture of the surface and used sensitive materials. The oil was applied in thick layers, and materials were found: string, jute fabric, asphalt, all kinds of adhesives and every thing in a color range of natural pigment products. During this second part of his artistic work step, Manolo Valdés did many graphic artworks and important sculptured works. He invented a new style in his collages - assembling. He used bronze but he preferred wood. Innovator, he used the roots of big trees to make boards and worked with adhesives and rivets to lead to forms inspired by art history. An original work was born, completely independent because coming from his own vision. Manolo Valdés succeeded in extending the works which marked art and helped in their metamorphosis. His production is found in the best museum collections (Metropolitan Museum, Beaubourg, Guggenheim - Bilbao, Reina Sofia - Madrid…).
Artists on display
The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.
Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.
We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
