Notes of biography

Leif Kath is born in 1945 in Denmark. He lives and works in Christiansfeld in southern Jutland, his homeland. Multidisciplinary artist, Leif Kath works actively for the past nearly 45 years on the Danish art scene: painter, illustrator and graphic designer (etchings, lithographs, etc.), but also ceramist, designer and sculptor. His first debuts are with a group exhibition at the Charlottenborg Spring Salon in 1969. He is an engaged artist whose productivity and creativity are ever more innovative. An exhibition is being held at the Brundlund Museum of Art (September 2010-January 2011); its recounts, with more than 150 works by the artist, all facets of the creative world of Leif Kath, from the very beginning of the career Art of the Artist (mid 60).
Leif Kath is part of the Danish artists' association «Den Frie Udstilling », founded in 1891 to protest against the conditions of participation in exhibitions at the Charlottenborg Spring Salon (founded in 1857 in Copenhagen) and inspired by the initiative French « Salon des Refuses ». Note that this artists' association is probably the oldest in the world organization and holds an annual exhibition of its members.
Leif Kath exhibits regularly for many years, through personal exhibitions (in Denmark - Aarhus, Copenhagen, Kolding, etc. - and the United States - New York - mostly) and international group exhibitions (Nordisk grafikunion, Danish Graphic Art of Oslo, Biennial of Graphic Arts in Vienna, Milan Premio del Disegno, Middlesbrough Biennial of drawings, Barcelona Miniprint, Triennial of Graphic Art in Tallinn, etc.). Note that large Danish galleries exhibit his work (Weinberger Gallery in Copenhagen where we discover the magnificent work of writer and artist or MøllerWitt Gallery of Aarhus). Similarly, many institutions and Danish museums have acquired works by the artist in their background (Kastrupgårdsamlingen, Ribe Kunstmuseum, Trapholt Museum of Art of Koldin, Vejle Kunstmuseum or Art Museum of Bornholm).
The pictorial practice of Leif Kath belongs to himself, moving gracefully on the shores of informal art. « His motives, whether through painting, drawing, graphic arts, or sculpture, seem to refer only to the representation of form » writes Erik Meistrup. The artist works, very often, on the contrast of black and white. Each artist's work seems to have considerable autonomy in which the artist uses the perception of something indefinable.
The Leif Kath approach to art is driven by a curiosity of investigators, by a taste of perfection and a set of very personal report of colors and tones. The beautiful graphic work of Leif Kath, begins by engravings and linocuts where a «mysterious figuration » is present, has slipped gradually into an abstract expression. The artist works in this field, in series, leading ever further experimentation.
His evolution is a sign of freedom of Leif Kath and of his independence!

Artists on display

The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.

Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.

We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
