C'est l'histoire d'une formidable amitié entre Jean Tinguely et la famille Cesana.
Qui n'a pas rêvé un jour de recevoir une lettre de Jean Tinguely, une de ces lettres envoyées et reçues dans un grand éclat de rire, dans un moment de joie totale comme sait en réserver l'Amitié ?
Il est touchant d'imaginer la générosité de Jean Tinguely à l'égard de ses amis, mais aussi le bonheur de ceux-ci à se sentir accueillis dans le monde burlesque et foisonnant de l'artiste.
Les lettres de Jean Tinguely constituent une part marquante de son oeuvre dessiné. Sa rencontre avec Niki de Saint-Phalle en 1961 eut une grande influence sur sa correspondance.
Très vite, il lui "emprunta" ses tampons, autocollants, décalcomanies (ce qu'il appelait alors "le sport de l'objet trouvé"), mais aussi.... La Couleur ! On retrouve d'ailleurs dans ces cinq lettres de nombreux autocollants qui reproduisent des oeuvres de sa compagne.
Ces lettres sont à l'image de l'oeuvre sculpté de l'artiste. C'est la recherche de l'harmonie dans le chaos, le mouvement et la vitesse. Une accumulation d'éléments distincts, si divers pourtant, qui se parlent et se répondent grâce à la couleur et au texte qui les relient.
L'écriture s'y promène, nerveuse, dans un joyeux désordre, totalement loufoque, enrichie de lettrines, de dessins, et tout cela forme un feu d'artifice qui réchauffe le coeur. Car il s'agit bien de communication humaine... sur le mode jubilatoire.

The publication of a postal stamp is often a homage paid by a nation to a place, an event, a remarkable cause or a character which count. The painters and other artists do not escape from this rule. Some are however "forgotten" of postal art. Here, gathered below (French or foreign), emitted stamps (206) or simple studies of stamp (224) in homage to the artists represented on our website. The first French stamp was emitted in 1849, England preceded us by ten years. There is often a share of voyage in this small form of shape paper. The stamp circulates, sails, flies away, it makes dream, then dream a little. M.C.
When the stamp is really emitted, the artist name is preceded of an asterisk (*). It is certain that we do not know each stamp emitted for such or such artist; do not hesitate with us to make known them!

Le mercredi 4 septembre, les Fribourgeois (Suisse) en deuil n’en croyaient pas leurs yeux ni leurs oreilles ! Le sculpteur Jean Tinguely décédé le 30 août 1991 d’une attaque cérébrale à l’hôpital de Berne, à l’âge de 66 ans, fit de ses obsèques son œuvre ultime. Selon ses dernières volontés, une fanfare et l’une de ses machines, « Chahut », ouvrirent le cortège. L’engin pétaradait et lançait force fumées sur la foule . . . surprise et émerveillée ! Le corps de l’artiste fut plus tard inhumé en présence de ses deux anciennes épouses, Niki de Saint-Phalle et Eva Aeppli, dans le cimetière de Neyruz, petit village près de Fribourg. En son hommage, nous déposons sur sa dernière demeure, une fleur blanche.

Notes of biography
Jean Tinguely is born in Switzerland (Fribourg) in 1925. At the age of 14, he abandons his secondary studies and enrols in the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule (School of Applied Arts) in Basel in 1940; a pupil of Julia Ris, he will study there until 1945. He then makes a living doing odd jobs until 1953, when he settles in Paris. He works with Spoerri, in the studio of Jean Lurçat.
His first solo exhibition will be mounted in 1954. In 1955, he participates in group exhibitions, then in the exhibition Le mouvement (“Movement”), organized by the Galerie Denise René, a show that celebrates kinetic art (with Agam, Vasarely, etc.). In the same year, he builds the Meta series, machines that paint canvas, parodying abstraction, Tachism and Abstract Expressionism. This parody of painting in no way precludes Tinguely from drawing and painting.
Jean Tinguely becomes a member of the Groupe Espace in 1959 and, in 1960, is co-founder of the New Realist (Nouveau réalisme) movement (Restany, Arman, César, Yves Klein, Martial Raysse, etc.). During a trip to the United States, he makes contact with Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns.
In 1961, Tinguely will play a significant role in the international exhibition Bewogen Beweging (Art in Motion) at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. For the artist, “the new perceptual approach to reality” emerges through the electric motor and the machine. In collaboration with his wife, Niki de Saint-Phalle, he produces numerous works (notably the “Fontaine Stravinsky” near the Centre Pompidou, Beaubourg) and will participate in a series of gigantic “happenings”, from New York to Copenhagen, where his works smoke, explode and self-destruct in a sometimes terrible crash.
In 1967, the Rotozazas appear: sculptures, painted black, that play ball; in 1970, there will be the Chars and the Bascules, sculptures that move, very noisily, along the tracks. Later, feathers, bulbs, skulls and dentures will come to embellish his machines. Many solo exhibitions in galleries and museums around the world will be dedicated to this baroque work, often made of machines with explosive, demented movements.
Jean Tinguely dies in 1991 in Bern (Switzerland).

The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.
Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.
