The publication of a postal stamp is often a homage paid by a nation to a place, an event, a remarkable cause or a character which count. The painters and other artists do not escape from this rule. Some are however "forgotten" of postal art. Here, gathered below (French or foreign), emitted stamps (206) or simple studies of stamp (224) in homage to the artists represented on our website. The first French stamp was emitted in 1849, England preceded us by ten years. There is often a share of voyage in this small form of shape paper. The stamp circulates, sails, flies away, it makes dream, then dream a little. M.C.

Le peintre, graveur, James Coignard s’en est allé à l’âge de 82 ans, le 7 mars 2008. Il sera incinéré quelques jours plus tard au cimetière du Père Lachaise (Paris). Nous garderons de lui le souvenir d’une rencontre cannoise extrêmement amicale et chaleureuse. Toutes nos pensées vont aux siens, et particulièrement à son fils Simon. James Coignard aimait l’immensité de la mer, les horizons sans limite et la lumière de notre région ; les siens réunis, ces cendres furent dispersées au large de Cannes, aux rives des îles de Lérins. En son hommage, avec respect, nous déposons cette rose blanche au fil de l’eau.

Notes of biography
Painter, sculptor, French engraver was born in Tours in 1925. He lived and worked in Antibes (Alpes-Maritimes); he died in March 2008.
James Coignard begins studying to the Art school of Nice in 1948. However he spents a large part of his life in the Riviera, Coignard has been very itinerant, and thus he has been living 3 years in New-Orleans (1985-88). He organises many collective and personal exhibitions in France and abroad where his art is often appreciated (Sweden, Switzerland, the United States, France, etc).
In the same time, he likes carving (Sculptures of glass, Venice, 1961 / Bronzes in 1977), he carries out, in 1975, an exhibition with fourteen tapestries in Brno (Czechoslovakia).
His own personal engraved work - mainly with carborundum (Henri Goetz) - starts in 1968. He works with a great number of poets through the creation of a book.
Until the Sixties, Coignard painted in an expressionnist way, with washed-out colors and a very worked material. Later he creates abstract paintings, composed of random spots, regular forms, and typographical features. He often paints in brown and grey harmonies, always with a worked substance. The man has a right glance, a word and a calm gesture. Perhaps is he listening the world which surrounds him with its ugliness, and his beauty.
Artists on display
The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.
Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.
We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
