Bousculé par l'excès de notoriété, les sollicitations incessantes, et peut-être aussi par une rupture douloureuse, David Hockney quitte discrètement Londres pour s'installer à Paris en 1973, peu après la mort de Picasso qu'il admirait tant. Il s'installe dans un appartement Cour de Rohan, un petit passage tout près du Boulevard Saint-Germain.
C'est un temps de repli, de lecture, de vie douce dans les cafés, de fréquentation assidue du Louvre, de réflexion sur son travail. Son œuvre s'inscrit encore dans une phase « naturaliste », fondée sur l'observation directe. A Paris, le dessin occupe une grande partie de son travail. Aux crayons de couleur, il réalise de nombreux portraits de ses amis, notamment ceux célèbres de Célia Birtwell. Il dessine aussi des scènes d'intérieur où souvent s'invite un bouquet de fleurs. Dans ces compositions, sa nature hédoniste s'exprime d'une manière intimiste et simple. La nature, sa végétation, ont toujours occupé une grande place dans son œuvre, et aujourd'hui plus que jamais. Il le dit, sa représentation n'est que défi, choix successifs, et in fine, parcours intérieur, tentative de plénitude, d'harmonie, de rêverie, de présence au monde.

The publication of a postal stamp is often a homage paid by a nation to a place, an event, a remarkable cause or a character which count. The painters and other artists do not escape from this rule. Some are however "forgotten" of postal art. Here, gathered below (French or foreign), emitted stamps (206) or simple studies of stamp (224) in homage to the artists represented on our website. The first French stamp was emitted in 1849, England preceded us by ten years. There is often a share of voyage in this small form of shape paper. The stamp circulates, sails, flies away, it makes dream, then dream a little. M.C.

Notes of biography
Born in Bradford, England in 1937, David Hockney studies at Bradford College of Art from 1953-1957, then at the Royal College of Art in London from 1959-1962. From the beginning of the 60’s, Hockney mixes abstract art, figuration and Pop art in his work. His first solo exhibition is organized in London in 1962. His paintings are inspired by the world of popular consummation and personage.
He moves to the Los Angeles in 1963. He becomes aware of his homosexual desires and assumes them. In 1963 his works become more personal, more automous and autobiographic; he paints self portraits, interiors scenes, boys in the shower, swimming and on vacation. His art expresses a refusal of realistic representation by means of using an acidic treatment of the paint and by scattering the canvas with specific details. The artist adds tint to a thin layer of paint to give an impression similar to photography.
Towards the end of the 70’s, Hockney redevelops collage and engraving with the aid of new techniques (encorporating polaroid photography, fractal lithographs, photocopies, faxed images, etc.). In the 80’s, David Hockney is inspired by ancient and modern methods, painting portraits and self portraits, working on perspective and multiple view points. Hockney’s panoramic landscapes are superimposed in an unique image of several dozen photographs taken from different angles. Space takes precedence in his work.
David Hockney is considered as one of the eminent painters of the 20th century. He lives and works in Hollywood in the United States.

The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.
