Biography of Vincent Rougier
Vincent Rougier was born in Paris in 1948. Through each of these media of expression, he is the artist of what he calls playful figuration-abstraction.
After training in visual arts in Paris and some time at the Charpentier Academy, Vincent Rougier published his first artist's book in 1969.
He defines himself as a painter, visual artist, independent publisher, engraver, in other words he is immersed in the crafts: books, bookbinding, marbled papers, and intaglio engraving are daily exercises for him.
He won the Fénéon Prize in 1976.
Seizing the opportunity to acquire a disused clothing workshop, he settled in Soligny-la-Trappe in a large space where all the forms of his passions would rub shoulders. In this former sewing workshop there are extraordinary machines that he will gradually tame for hiss use as an artist. The result over the years is astonishing works, where the material, crumpled, pleated, put in the oven, tells another story and lives another life. The place also of a new birth for the Ficelle issue which combines the arts with humor and poetry; Ficelle will be available in several collections (Ficelle noire, Plis urgents) and calls upon many artists and poets. When Vincent Rougier publishes his little books, he does so in a particular way, each work being linked by strings, a principle that came to him overnight. Everywhere, in his studio, dozens of little books hang from the ceiling. The artist-publisher regularly presents his work in Salons or annual events (Marché de la Poésie Saint-Sulpice, for example). He participates in exhibitions and editions of prints in Paris, Geneva, etc. He also creates installations of "grands froissés" (Pontoise Theater, Dinard Hospital, Alençon, etc.).With paper, Vincent Rougier transforms this material into a unique art of its kind. "We have industrialized this element for the pleasure of all. But, paper remains above all an art that very few people appreciate," says the publisher.A man of great rigor, Vincent Rougier lives and works in Soligny-La-Trappe (Lower Normandy). Considering himself an "old craftsman", Vincent Rougier frequently opens the doors of his workshop to the most curious who wish to discover his creations.
