Biography of Sean Scully
Born in Dublin in 1945, Sean Scully, is an Irish American painter. First, he attended typographer classes. He is one of the best-known living abstract painters of his generation. Sean Scully’s great achievement has been the reinvigoration of abstract paintings. Influenced by Rothko and Mondrian, inspired by Matisse and Van Gogh, since the beginning Sean Scully has abandoned figuration. His paintings, with pleasant austerity, develop themes like grids, stripes and checkerboard. He is also a famous engraver; his graphic works show his complicated way with the insistence on the materials and concrete production. Sean Scully graphic works make up Scully the manual worker with Scully the artist. Revealed to French public by the exhibition presented at the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume in october 1966, Sean Scully never stopped to receive, these last past years, evidences of international recognition: retrospective at Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, Francfort, Barcelona, Bologna, Munich, Dublin museums, and more. He is represented in the permanent collections of the Guggenheim Museum in New-York, the National Gallery in Washington, the Fort Worth Museum in Texas and the Albertina Museum in Vienna.
