  Biography of Maximilien Luce

  Maximilien Luce was born in Paris in 1858. After a training at the Decorative Arts Scholl, he studies etching (1872). Then, he takes classes at the Swiss Academy followed by the Fine Arts School. After his meeting with Pissaro, Seurat and Signac, Luce totally immerses himself in the impressionist world, all together they set up the neo-impressionist movement. Coming from the Montparnasse working class, Luce will essentially be a landscape painter, also painting scenes from industrial cities and men at work. The artist will be finally recognized by using pointillism, a technique developed by Georges Seurat.  Maximilien Luce will be fascinated by the discovery of new colors brought by the industrial revolution. Like Pissaro, he will be an active anarchist. During the second world war, Luce will paint fighting scenes, a militant painting hostile to the war horrors. In 1934, Luce succeeds to Signac at the « Independant Artists Society ». Printer, painter, anarchist, Maximilien Luce died in Paris in 1941.
