Biography of Mark Andrew Godwin
Mark Andrew Godwin was born in 1957 in Birmingham, England. Eager to hone his artistic talent, he began formal art training in 1974 at the Bourneville School of Art, and then went on to earn an MA in printmaking at the Royal College of Art in 1982. After graduating, he worked as a copperplate printer and platemaker in London. Working in several London studios, Godwin was able to hone his printmaking technique and establish contacts with local artists. These years of working closely with artists had a profound effect on him, giving him the confidence to pursue his own artistic vision. His use of colour and complex, often large-scale, compositions are hallmarks of his work during this period. Mark Andrew Godwin began to attract the interest of galleries and dealers for his own paintings and prints, which allowed him to concentrate on creating his own work. The artist decides to settle on the south-east coast of England, for him a constant source of inspiration. Godwin prefers to paint. Brilliant landscapes and seascapes are his favourite themes. He paints and engraves.The motif of landscape has occupied an important place in Mark Andrew Godwin's work for over thirty years now. The artist has been strongly influenced by the 18th century romantic notion of the sublime and by the common desire for an emotional encounter with nature. His art aims to find a visual equivalent to his feeling in front of nature. These are paintings about the poetic idea of landscape. There is a nostalgia and a timelessness in his work, as well as a conscious blurring of the boundaries between abstraction and figurative representation, between two realities. These are landscapes of the imagination, works about feelings. Mark Andrew Godwin is a studio artist with an intuitive approach to painting and printmaking, with trial and error and the visible signs of the journey that follows. The artist conveys a collective memory of the landscape. His works resonate with us.After moving to Hastings, East Sussex, in early 2000, Mark Godwin's work has continued to develop. His oeuvre is now heavily focused on painting, both on canvas and paper.Mark Andrew Godwin has exhibited regularly in the UK and abroad, including at many international art fairs. His works are held in numerous art collections and by private collectors around the world.
