Biography of Léon Gischia
Leon Gischia is born in Dax in 1903. On his early life he draws and decided, in 1921, to devote to painting, enrolling at the Academie Moderne (where Othon Friesz teaches). He has a passion for painting theory. From 1927 to 1930, he lives in United States where he binds with Calder. Back in France, Fernand Léger Gischia meets Fernand Leger with whom he teaches at the Modern Academy (Academie Moderne). He participates in 1937 at the Salon of Young Artists (Salon des Jeunes Artistes.) His first solo exhibition is held at the Galery Jeanne Bucher in 1938, he participates in 1941, alongside Bissière, Bertholle, Le Moal, Manessier, Singier to the exhibition of "Twenty young artists from French tradition" organized by Jean Bazaine, first manifestation of avant-garde painting under the occupation. Gischia meets Maurice Esteve and Edouard Pignon (France Gallery) (Galerie de France, 1943) and he befriends them and Zoran Music. Leon Gischia participates (1945-1957) at the Salon of Mai, he is also one of the founding members of this salon. Eminent painter of the New School of Paris, he creates many sets and costumes for the Jean Vilar’s National Popular Theater marked by his style. There are three periods in the work of Gischia: the years 1917 to 1942 is placed under the sign of figuration, the years 1946 to 1960 lead him to the limits of abstraction, from 1960 until his death a geometrization existence marks his work. He settles in 1963 in Venice, where he dies in 1991.
