Le catalogue raisonné de l’oeuvre gravé et lithographié de Wifredo Lam a été établi par Dominique Tonneau-Ryckelynck et publié par le Musée de Gravelines en 1994. Scindé en deux chapitres - les estampes éditées et les estampes non éditées -, l’ouvrage répertorie l’ensemble de l’oeuvre graphique de l’artiste sur près de 40 ans de création en ce domaine. Entamée en 1945 par une eau-forte qui accompagne le livre « Voyages à travers la peinture » de Pierre Loeb (publié en 1946), ce long parcours s’achèvera en 1982 (année de disparition de l’artiste) par une suite de six eaux-fortes en couleurs pour l’ouvrage « L’herbe sous les pavés » de Jean-Dominique Rey. Wifredo Lam arrive à la gravure dans la deuxième partie de son oeuvre. Il a déjà quarante-trois ans, et un long parcours de peintre derrière lui, quand il réalise sa première gravure en 1945. Lam va rapidement comprendre les richesses que peuvent apporter les différentes techniques de la gravure à l’illustration d’un texte. Comme sa première gravure, sa première lithographie sera exécutée en noir et blanc (1947).
