« Je suis né pour faire des estampes. Je crois cela. Je peux penser à l’envers, » a déclaré recemment l’artiste. Le Catalogue Raisonné de l’œuvre graphique de Jim Dine se compose de quatre volumes ; l’ensemble porte sur une période de quarante années de création, de 1960 à 2000. L’auteur du second volume présenté ici, « Jim Dine, prints 1970-1977 » (Thomas, 1977) répertorie 224 œuvres imprimées sur papier ; ce travail fut précédé par un premier volume, « Jim Dine, the complete graphics, 1960-1969 » (Ed. Galerie Mikro, Berlin, 1970), qui se consacra au dix premières années de l’artiste en ce domaine. Un troisiéme volume (« Jim Dine, prints 1977-1985 », Feinberg, 1985), puis un quatrième (« Jim Dine Prints, 1985-2000 », E. Carpenter et autres, Ed. Minneapolis Institute of Art, 2002) vinrent continuer de constituer, à ce jour, la référence dans le domaine de l’art graphique pour l’artiste. On y découvrira que l’artiste utilisa et utilise toutes les différentes techniques liées à l’estampe : lithographies, gravures à l’eau-forte et à l’aquatinte, pointes-sèches, gravures sur carton, bois gravés, linogravures, carborundum.
