Biography of Karen Daye-Hutchinson
Karen Daye-Hutchinson works and lives in Belfast (Northern Ireland). She has been painting and printing since her younger age ; very early, she realizes portraits which she paints in her bedroom after long walks in the mountains or woods, the landscapes she reproduces during her long sunny summer breaks.
She graduates from Manchester School of Art and from Ulster University. Painter, etcher, jewellery designer, she owns a shop in downtown Belfast where she offers her creations among others. Karen Daye-Hutchinson is a polyvalent artist with quite a prolific creativity.
She joined and attended many international exhibitions all over the world which allowed her to cross paths with spectacular innovative and creative people. Karen Daye-Hutchinson is named ambassador for Northern Ireland arts and she particulary loves to share her experiences.
Karen Daye-Hutchinson is Director and Trustee of Belfast Print Workshop, a compagny that provide all its members a workshop space with high quality printing facilities, complete tools, everything being devoted to the artists allowing them to pursue their work in the best conditions.
In 2013, she creates Parenthesis with Helen Lavery. Parenthesis was created as a collaborative project, showcasing hybrid printmaking in the form of traditional works on paper and bespoke book.
As a jewellery designer for many years, Ghost & Bonesetter (Karen Daye-Hutchinson) realizes in 1992 one of her dreams by opening Coppermoon, an exhibition space where she can sell creations of her own and from other talented artists. This space, nested in a tiny street close to the Belfast City Hall has always been at the avant-garde for promoting arts and crafts from Northern Ireland. Using traditional etching techniques, forging, hammering, the unique pieces are influenced by history, storytelling and music. « I love raw design, hammer marks, coloured metals, spontanious drawings and etched line, » says the artist.
Karen Daye-Hurchinson’s works are present in many private and public collections, she has worked in many public and private collections, including the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Office of Public Works in Dublin, and NSPCC London HQ. Thanks to her involvement for arts in her country, she has been recognised by HRH the Prince of Wales with a Gold Standard. In 2018, Karen Daye-Hutchinson was chosen to create the Trophy of the Allianz Art & Business Award. She joined in November 2018 the collective Prism Print exhibition in Antrim (Northern Ireland).
The creative world of Karen Daye-Hutchinson is very intimate, intuitive, phantasmagoric often suffused with humour, visions mixing dream and reality, blending happiness with tradition and exploration of unknown lands.
