Biography of Jose Luis Cuevas
Jose Luis Cuevas is born in Mexico in 1934. He is essentially self-taught in art. At the service of his master, Rufino Tamayo, he participates in the adventure of modern Mexican art. The artist express himself through various fields of art: painting, mural painting, sculpture, printmaking, illustration for many books. . . actor in the movies industries. He acquires a great fame in the late 50s, thanks to the journal « Novedades » that publishes the Manifesto « La Cortina de Nopal », real document for the « Out Generation » that seeks to break with the Mexican mural painting school and its social message. The artist exhibits around the world (Washington, Paris, New York, Rome, Venice, Sao Paulo, Vienna, Madrid, Santiago, etc.) and gets, over time, many prizes (Biennale of Sao Paulo in 1959, National Award of Science and Arts of Mexico in 1981 or the « Tomas Francisco Prieto » granted by Queen Sofia in 1991, in particular). Jose Luis Cuevas held a weekly column in the newspaper « Excelsior », one of the leading Mexican newspapers. A museum is named after him in Mexico City, museum honoring his contribution to art and where a large number of his works is gathered.
