Biography of Jean Le Gac
Representative of the New Figuration, Jean Le Gac is born in Alès (Gard) in 1936. He spends his youth in the Tarn, as a teenager, his early talent for drawing is noticed. He decides to become a painter and, earning a state scholarship, he moves to Paris where he receives the diploma of professor of drawing and visual arts in 1958. The virtual disappearance of traditional painting practice calls into question the project of being an painter-artist. Jean Le Gac takes refuge in the role of the teacher who teaches drawing at Bethune in the North and, during his spare time, pursues a personal practice. PPassionate about literature, he comes to propose, first in small notebooks juxtaposing photos and allusive texts, the narrative of the doings of an anonymous painter. For the first time, the artist exhibits in a large international art event in 1972 ("Documenta V") under the "Individual Mythologies". Le Gac then integrates into a "Narrative Art" (Boltansky, Annette Messager, Jochen Gerz). Therefore, he exhibits regularly at the Templon Gallery (Paris). Le Gac yet refuses to be drawn into the new trends of art in fashion that he seemed to inaugurate at the time through proceedings close to the Land Art or Performance. He steps back and continues a work where the "Painter", that is to say himself, becomes the subject-object.
