Isolde Baumgart was born in Munich (Germany) in 1935. She studies in Berlin and then in Kassel. She has a passion for print. As a student at the Fine Arts School of Kassel, she befriends Roger Platiel, they remain good friends right up until his disappearance in 1978. She follows his steps moving to Paris to further her learning on print at
Isolde Baumgart was born in Munich (Germany) in 1935. She studies in Berlin and then in Kassel. She has a passion for print. As a student at the Fine Arts School of Kassel, she befriends Roger Platiel, they remain good friends right up until his disappearance in 1978. She follows his steps moving to Paris to further her learning on print at Stanley William Hayter’s famous Atelier 17 where she meets the American graphic artist Jim Monson. They marry in 1973, and come to share over 40 years of matrimony. Over the years you find her signature on many wonderful Deutsche Bundespost (German Post) stamps, for whom she is a print artist for many decades, on posters of various events (Munich Fair, the Bicentenary of the French Revolution,…) or on cinema posters and on advertising. She was only thirty when she started teaching at the American Center in Paris, she also taught at the University of Connecticut, at the Merz Akademie of Stuttgart and at the University of Kassel. A member of the International Graphic Alliance (AGI), she has solo shows in Europe and in the states, as of the 60s and all over the world as part of group exhibitions winning many prestigious prizes. Her art can be found amongst many private collections and in important international institutions such as Berlin, Frankfurt, Kassel, Minneapolis, Munich, the Paris National Library, Oslo, Skopje, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden,…). Isolde Baumgart-Monson passed away in 2011.
