Biography of Horst Antès
Horst Antes is born in Heppenheim (Germany) in 1936. He studies at the Academy of Karlsruhe (1957-1959), where he receives a solid training in engraving. Very early, his work is noticed and the young man is rewarded many prices (Town of Hanover, price Junger Westen, biennial of the Young People of Paris, Villa Romona of Florence, etc.). In 1963, he exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris and, as from this year, he is chosen to represent his country in many international biennial events. His painting is associated to the current international expressionist, making the artist a precursor since this art movement becomes only in vogue in the 70 and 80. One can connect the expressionism of Handles, from a specific period, with the Squeaking expressionism of Max Beckmann and George Grosz. From 1960, Horst Antes creates a kind of schematized character (sort of gnome) who becomes his single theme, with this being (this intelligence), devoid of torso and with two bunk eyes, the artist wants to depict the despair of human condition.
