The French Haitian-born painter Herve Telemaque is born in Port-au-Prince (Haiti) in 1937. His work is associated with the movement “ Figuration narrative”. He leaves Haiti for New York in 1957 and enrolls at the Art Student's League where he studies with Julian Levi until 1960. During his stay in the United States, he is nurtured by the abstract expressionism and surrealism inspired by artists such as Arshile Gorky. He finds his way into the precepts of Pop Art and marks his originality in 1959 with the painting “Mermaid “. He moves to Paris in 1961 and attends the Surrealists.
Biography of Hervé Telemaque
In 1964, he participates in the exhibition “Daily Mythology” organized at the Museum of Modern Art in the City of Paris, thus combining it with the Figuration Narrative. For a long time, he works exclusively on collage and assemblage. He goes back during the 80’s to painting and drawing. From 90 years, Telemaque continues his research through charcoal drawings. In 2000, he illustrates by engravings and lithographs, two works by the poet Serge Fauchereau. In the 2000s, he produces a series of acrylic paintings on Africa. Telemaque is exhibited in many galleries and museums of international renown.
