Biography of Gustave Asselbergs
The Dutch painter and graphic designer Gustave Asselbergs was born in 1938 in Amsterdam. After studying drawing at the Rijksnormaalschool in Amsterdam, he trained as a self-taught painter. During his very short life, Gustave Asselbergs lived and worked in Amsterdam; he made an important study trip to the United States and hesitated to settle there. Many of the scenes in Gustave Asselbergs' work, relating to the "American way of life," would captivate an entire generation. The United States was for him a country with explosive dynamics and unlimited possibilities. His painted collages are considered the most representative works of Dutch Pop Art. The expression of his own personality and social attitudes are reflected in his work. Thee artist will often sign his works with a simple "Gustave". His lightning career was crowned in 1966 with one of the major awards in the art world, the Harkness Fellowship. His work exudes the spirit of energy and innovation. "Gustave was well aware of the latest international developments in the field of visual arts, such as the New Realism in France or the American Pop Art. He was among the first in the Netherlands to take these new foreign influences into account in their work. His career was cut short abruptly in 1967, when the artist was struck by a brain tumor, just as he was beginning to gain international recognition. A year later, a commemorative exhibition of his work will be held at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
