Painter Gérard Schlosser was born in Lille in 1931. Starting out as a schoolboy in Chaumont, at the age of 15 he enrolled at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris, where he studied goldsmithing. After a brief spell at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he decided to devote himself to painting. He opted for figuration: fragments of bodies painted in flat tints and surrounded by black. These works are reminiscent of the work of Pop-Art artists. Despite several exhibitions, his beginnings were difficult. From the early '70s onwards, his creative process involved photography, like that of other French artists associated with hyperrealism or narrative figuration (Monory, Rancillac, Aillaud or Fromanger). “ A painting tells a story, “ he says, describing his work. The artist always works from black-and-white photos that he shoots and develops himself, leaving him free to choose and arrange the colors. The artist's canvases are often organized in series: reclining female bodies, landscapes, night views. Schlosser paints detail, revealing detail that does not court the anecdotal, but tells a story that is always falsely anodyne. He lives and works in Paris.
