Biography of Franz Beer
"My work is a search for myself" says the artist. The Austrian abstract painter Franz Beer was born in Vienna in 1929. Franz Beer studied art at the Academy of Arts and Painting in Vienna from 1944 to 1950, where he graduated in 1950. The young artist spent more than fifteen years, from 1950 to 1966, traveling throughout Europe, visiting his own country, but also Germany, Italy, Switzerland and France. His first personal exhibitions were organized in the early 1950s (Florence, Ascona, Düsseldorf, etc.).
He arrived in Paris in 1958 and was a member of the Bing gallery team from 1959 to 1965, with whom he had an exclusive contract.
With surprising light and shadow effects in his characteristic impasto work, as well as in the collages of smaller pieces, the artist combines natural matter with strict order. From 1966 to 1968 he lived in the United States where he taught at the Massachusetts College of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts in 1966-1967, at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1968. In 1974, he taught at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, North Carolina.Upon his return to Europe in 1975, he was appointed Professor Emeritus at the Fachhochschule für Gestaltung in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany, until 1991. Since 1992, Franz Beer has lived mainly in Venice. Numerous museums in Italy, Switzerland, the United States, Germany and Austria have works by the artist in their collections, including the Peggy Guggenheim in Venice, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome and the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts.
