Biography of Eugène Grasset
Eugene Samuel Grasset is born in Paris of Swiss parents in 1841. Wishing to be an architect, he studies at Zurich Polytechnicon. He comes to Marseilles in 1865, travels (including Egypt), he returns to Lausanne (dealing with decorative sculpture) before settling permanently in Paris in 1871. There he becomes known for his illustrations for books and collaborates with many magazines ("Paris illustré", mainly). He produces numerous posters and lithographs. His activity is overwhelming; he works on numerous decorations, designs mosaics, and stained glass boxes. Eugene Grasset intervenes in many other areas: carpets, fabrics . . . postage stamps or types of plates. For over 25 years, he teaches in different schools or academies (Guerin School, School of Graphic Art, La Grande Chaumière, Estienne School). Eugene Grasset dies in 1917 in Sceaux.
