Biography of Equipo Cronica
In 1964, Rafael Solbes, Manolo Valdés and Juan Antonio Toledo set up Equipo Crónica, a Spanish pop art group. Juan Antonio Toledo will leave the trio after only one year. The two artists left will proceed their association until 1981 (when Rafael Solbes disappears). That year, a new era opens up in Spain and democracy is finally on the march. Their art is unique in a sense that it is a mix of realism, pictural quotes, anachronism and pastiches parodying well known styles and patterns (Antonio Saura, Picasso, Fernand Léger and many others). Despite a real sense of humour and jubilation, their work constantly carries Francoism shadow. From 1965 to 1981 the Crónica group will participate in many « personal » or group exhibitions, creating with strenght and skill a critical reading of art history and power symbols. From 1981 Manolo Valdès, now alone, will lead the famous artistic career that we know of.
