Biography of Enrique Zanartu
Enrique Zañartu, Chilean painter was born in Paris in 1921. Self-taught artist, he learns how to paint and draw. Related to surrealism, the artist’s works remind us, under certain formal circumstances, the dreamlike and abstract landscapes of Joan Miro despite the suggested Latin-American regions (Machu-Picchu, the Andes Cordillera, etc…). In 1944, while travelling in the US, he decides –to differ from his brother Nemesio Antùnez- to use his mother’s family name. Now settled in New York, he works at the Atelier 17 directed by Stanley William Hayter. For 7 years, Enrique Zañartu has the entire responsabilty of the Atelier French branch opened in 1950 in Paris, thus becoming the etcher’s right hand man. Enrique Zañartu had many occasions to exhibit his work in several museums and galleries worlwide (Santiago, Paris, Lima, Berlin, Caracas, Havana or Bogota). Zañartu teaches in many universities abroad. Painter and etcher, the artist will confirm his art by using pure colors and lines applied with spontaneity and resolution. Shapes, both light and solid are conceived with suggestion. He dies in Paris in 2000.
