Biography of Douglas Swan
Douglas Litterick Swan, American, was born in New-Britain (Connecticut, U.S.A) in 1930 to Scottish parents. When he was 6 years old, they moved to Scotland. He studied at the Dundee College of Art from 1943 to 1953 where his teachers included the painter James MacKintosh, then at Trinity College of Music in London where he was graduated. In 1958, he was awarded a British Council scholarship to study in Italy ; living in Milano Douglas Swan enjoyed the vibrant Contemporary Art scene of the time provided by Lucio Fontana, Enrico Castellani and Roberto Crippa. During the late 1960s, Douglas Swan moved to Switzerland with his wife ; he became an important and established 20th-century painter. In 1967. He exhibited for the first time in Germany at the Municipal Gallery of Bochum and he decided to stay in Bonn - Germany. In 1986, he was awarded the Kunststipendium des Stadt given by the city of Bonn. Douglas Swan was awarded grants from the Royal Scottish Academy, Edimbourg, from British Council, and from Italian Government to study in Roma and Milano. During his career, Douglas Swan showed at the Royal Scotttish Academy, Edimbourg, Young Contemporaries, London Group, Gimpel Fils, and Artists International Association. He had a series of solo shows in Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Brazil, Netherlands and of course, Great Britain. His works are held in public and private collections. In 2000, Douglas Swan died in Bonn in an accident. Two years later, the donation of many of his artworks was accepted by the Museum of Bochum.
