Biography of Christian Renonciat
Sculptor Christian Renonciat was born in Paris in 1947. After studying at the Sorbonne, he obtained a degree in philosophy. In 1969, the young man joined an art workshop in Antibes (06), where he practiced woodworking for six years. In 1975, after this formative experience, Christian Renonciat opened his own workshop in Valbonne, where his first sculptures were created.
Back in Paris, he held his first exhibition in 1978 at the Alain Blondel gallery. Over the years, his interest in the material of things as subject matter, sculpted in wood through a variety of representations, from the most realistic (hyper-realistic) to almost abstract works, has become clearer. Renonciat seeks to reach the sensuality of perception to awaken the knowledge of touch. His works speak to our ears and hands.
Since 1984, Christian Renonciat has pursued a second parallel path, monumental creation, in which he combines imagination and technique in a wide variety of materials (cast steel, bronze, aluminum, gardens, etc.), often with the tone of an imaginary archaeology. Installations in France and abroad followed in quick succession: Saumur, Tokyo, Sapporo, Atlanta, San Francisco, Monte-Carlo, Aytré, La Rochelle, Paris, Issy, Reims, London, Seoul.Today, he rediscovers the substance of things in large-scale mural compositions of carved wood, like tapestries of cloth, plastic, wool, paper or cardboard.Christian Renonciat has mastered the art of playing with appearances and surprising the eye.He makes wood speak, suggesting the soft, the fragile and the gentle with a hard material he masters to perfection, combining incredible technical virtuosity with a profound and sensitive conceptualization of his work."What my sculptures propose is nothing other than a tender mirror in which the body is felt in the register that is most favorable to it: it is at once a surface, a grain, a warmth, and the tenderness of a supple, fluid, suave consistency," he writes. The artist has gained worldwide recognition.Regular solo exhibitions of his work have been held for many years in France, Switzerland, Belgium, USA, Japan and China.
