Biography of Carlo Marangio
Carlo Marangio was born in Lecce - Pouilles region in 1936 - south of Italy. He’s a frequent visitor of the Art Institute in his hometown then later registers to the Magiestero d’arte in Firenze. During his study years, his talent is rewarded by two First Prices obtained in different painting exhibitions. He is also invited at the third Biennal of young artists in Roma.
Once he gets his diploma, the young man settles in Milan where his work is quickly noticed.
A personal exhibition is organized at the Galleria dei Re Magi in 1960; Franco Russoli, then the director of the Pinacoteca in Brera visits the exhibition and writes a letter to pay him compliments.
Most of the time his first works are city views, landscapes and still life works closely related to his native region. In 1959, his brother’s death guides his painting toward expressionism with fainted colors where individuals seem afflicted with accute grief.
In 1960, the young artist with 1000 lira in hands travels to Paris where he wants to see the Joconda. His stay in Paris will last 50 years….! There, he finds a climate of freedom and discovers new artistic trends which will feed his creative disposition.
Around that time, a slow change occurs in his art. « Objets dans l’espace » (such is the title he gave to all his works since the early sixties) become more and more unrecognizable, « becoming pictural elements in a recreated order, conceived to satisfy eye and mind, soul and heart at the same time » writes the art critic, Jean Cathelin in 1971. One can feel in these paintings a special attention on pictural esthetics, one of the feature attributed to the school known as the Paris School. Slowly, the artist’s paintings will show baroque stuctures with great complexity and the colors will get richer, clearer and more vibrant. Marangio’s works are painted either with an ocre range (brown, red and yellow) or with a large assortment of blue shades.
No need to remind the great artistic erudition of Carlo Marangio, in fact not only he is a great artist but he is also a print lover, a discoverer and an art collector of all sorts and shapes. During his years in Paris he spent many hours every day in the Hôtel Drouot rooms.
Since 1958, year of his very first exhibition in Lecce, Carlo Marangio had many personal and collective exhibitions on a regular basis mainly in France and Italy.
Back in Italy since 2006, he now lives and works in Milano.
