Biography of Jorge Camacho
Jorge Camacho is born in 1934 in Havana (Cuba). In 1952, he abandons his law studies and begins painting, driven by an inner strength that still remains for him mysterious. In Mexico, in 1959, he meets the painter Jose Luis Cuevas, with whom he begins a long journey to the sources of pre-Columbian cultures (Teotihuacan, Olmec, Maya, Aztec) that defines a new direction in his painting. Camacho moves to Paris in 1959, where hee finds his friend the sculptor Augustin Cardenas. His first solo exhibition is held at the Galery Raymond Cordier in 1960. The following year, he meets André Breton and very quickly joins the Surrealist group, "Everyone talks about Surrealism, but few understand it." he writes. Camacho always remains faithful to this commitment. His poetic universe approaches tortured worlds, where the most sophisticated esoteric coasts along shamanism. His passions are writing, photography, music (jazz and flamenco) and ornithology; his themes are extensively present in his paintings as his engraving work. Jorge Camacho lives and works back and forth Paris and Andalusia since 1975.

A tribute to Jorge Camacho

Le peintre, dessinateur, graveur cubain lié au surréalisme Jorge Camacho est décédé le 30 mars 2011 à Paris ; il avait 77 ans. C’est par un après-midi de printemps ensoleillé que l’on fit des adieux à l’artiste au crématorium du cimetière du Père Lachaise. La cérémonie commenca par la lecture du plus connu des sonnets de Nerval : The Wretched One. Il sera d'abord lu en français, puis dans une traduction espagnole de Jorge Camacho lui-même. Un hommage émouvant de Zoè Valdes fut également lu. En guise de dernier adieu, des pétales de fleurs furent déposés sur une assiette posée sur le cercueil où apparaît le nom du peintre. Jorge Camacho repose au cimetière du Père Lachaise. En son hommage, avec respect, cette fleur de bombax.
