Biography of Bernard Beraud
The French painter Bernard Beraud was born in Grenoble in 1949. He will do his artistic training at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Grenoble. He is one of the «intuitive colorists» of geometric abstraction. There is at the same time a game of geometric shapes and a game on the perception of colors, their complementarity.
In 1967, during a stay in Paris, where he frequented the galleries and was interested in the different artistic movements of the time.
In 1975, Bernard Beraud joined Groupe X, and began his artistic research on colour the following year. He won the Prix Thorlet/ Arts-Sciences-Lettres Paris twice, in 1978 and 1985.
In 1987, he founded the group Radical with R. Orepük, Charles Payan and Mad. He participated in the group’s activities, notably in the realization of a very large fresco (19 X 5 m) at the former slaughterhouses of Marseille. « The Radical group continued its research in the vein of constructivists and supremacists, such as Mondrian and Malevich, with a colour treatment inspired by Itten and Josef Albers with the title “Art construit ”», the artist recalls. This group dissolved in 2006, Bernard Beraud will continue alone, work still in this geometric and constructive line. In 2009, sick, he stopped painting and took the time to reflect, before starting a work on color. He particularly admires the work of Josef Albers, adding the volume. «I paint a lot of cubes,» says the artist. He takes the color and the cube, recomposes them, reorders them, subjects them to the rules of a rigorous and parsimonious poetics; the color is first of all an experiment: that of the relation to space, to matter, to light.Bernard Beraud then became interested in levitation and the interaction of colors from the cube, then began a series of studies of visual rhythms on optical color; he then made several variations on the theme of black and white + color «Optical experiment» where the eye is the engine of the work. Aware of the importance of intuition in the use of colors, the artist plays on the imperfection of perception, expressed by basic geometric shapes, in color. A rigorous and stripped work. This fan of Jimi Hendrix focuses today on the question of the pure chromatic experience and works mainly on square formats of 20 X 20 cm. Bernard Béraud puts his eye to the test. The relationships between colors more than the colors themselves take the first place. The cubes dialogue, challenge each other and call out the gaze. They open the eyes and awaken the consciousness. They realize for the one who looks at the program of Josef Albers: to make us understand without discourse, by a practice of the gaze only, that the color is of both physical and psychological nature, that its reality is the transformation of a perception into a chromatic emotion by which its truth imposes itself of evidence.Bernard Beraud regularly exhibits at the events of the Académie de la Couleur (Bordeaux), the Aquitaine Museum and the 22 Rive Gauche Gallery. His work is present in many public and private collections, notably in the Netherlands (Mondriaanhuis Amersfoot).
