    Le livre illustré est un domaine de très grande importance dans l’œuvre d’André Masson. La passion qu’André Masson vouait aux livres revêtait un aspect unique et personnel, reflétant à la fois sa vaste érudition et son génie créateur. Le catalogue raisonné des livres illustrés de l’artiste a été établi par Lawrence Saphire et Patrick Cramer et publié par ce dernier en 1994. L’ouvrage répertorie et décrit 120 livres, albums et catalogues enrichis de gravures ou de lithographies originales d’André Masson entre 1924 et 1990. André Masson ne s’intéressera que tard à la gravure, puisque ce n’est qu’à 28 ans qu’il gravera pour la première fois, réalisant pendant dix années . . . une suite de livres illustrés. Masson a été l’ami de tant de poètes et de tant d’écrivains ; partout où il vécut, Masson a toujours recherché la compagnie d’éditeurs et de poètes, comme si ces relations lui importaient autant que l’encre et la peinture. L’artiste aura, sa vie durant, fait de la littérature le véritable pôle de sa vie intellectuelle.
