Biography of Ana Vidigal

Ana Vidigal is born in Lisbon (Portugal) in 1960. She follows course of painting at the School of Fine Arts of Lisbon and graduates in 1984. The young artist receives a fellowship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (1985-1987). In 1989, She follows training in rotogravure under the supervision of Bartolomeu Cid at the house of Art of Tavira (la Maison des Arts de Tavira). The artist becomes during two years (1998-1999) " the painter-resident" of the Museum of Contemporary Art - Fortaleza de Sain Tiago (Funchal). Ana Vidigal creates works with multiple references and made with different materials (fabric, Lalet, wood, rope, etc.); these objects, as her deliberately simple design, refer to childhood. In 1995, she is invited by the Lisbon Metro to conduct a first panel of tiles (azulejos) first for the station Alvalade, then 7 years later, to make further panels for the station Alfornelos. In 1997, the artist works at the invitation of the Portuguese Institute of Architectural Heritage. Ana Vidigal exhibits regularly in her country, solo exhibitions since 1981 (S.N.B.A., Modern Art Gallery, Lisbon) and collectives’ exhibitions (Portugal, France, Spain, Switzerland, USA, etc.). In 2003, she receives the price Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso. She is now very active in the field of computer art. Her work is represented in numerous public and private collections.
