Born in southern France (Plan-de-Cuques) in 1934, the sculptor and draughtsman Andre Barelier follows his education at the School of Fine Arts in Marseille (in the period 1948-1958) while working at a sculptor, and at the School of Fine Arts of Paris (period 1953-1961). In 1961, he receives the special prize in the contest of monumental art, and has won the first prize of Rome. Between 1962 and 1965, André Barelier stays at the Villa Medici, where his encounter with
